Between Dog and Wolf

Between Dog and Wolf

I hear everything in the evening, even the sound of my memory. I hear everything in the evening, even the cries of my hopes. I hear everything in the evening, when my heart grows still, guilty of not having loved enough this life that deserves so much love.

I love that uncertain passage when everything becomes more diffuse, when certain shapes surprise us, as though something new were about to emerge in our lives, when reality strikes us, reminding us that the day is over, that we will have to leave until tomorrow what we have not finished.

At twilight, the sun bows after illuminating everything beneath its floods of photons, unlike the moon, princess of the night, which draws every gaze towards herself, giving the impression that she is always ahead of us, we Earthlings who run after time.

Then the first glimmers of night sweep away the power of day. Gentleness takes command, footsteps become audible. Night must fall for us to feel that we exist. Even the trees seem more alive. We can make out every detail of them, as though their shadows had been drawn upon a wall.

Everything becomes so calm, so slow. Evening detests abrupt interruptions. The sky shimmers, seeming to reassure us and remind us that light never truly disappears.

Suddenly, the noise of cars assaults us, as though, at nightfall, we rediscovered a wild soul, as though darkness made us forget modernity. A power cut, and we are returned to our origins.

Puddles turn into mirrors, their depths hidden from view, preserving their mysteries, intent on keeping their intimacy away from prying eyes. And perhaps, in the darkness of night, when two naked bodies embrace, they too become reflections of one another, touched by an inaccessible depth.

For, between dog and wolf—or rather, between ourselves and the self—the half-light reminds us that we are alone, not to isolate ourselves, but to fill ourselves with the energy of silence. When light overloads our minds with images, darkness compels us to look within.

Whispers then spread:

“Be patient, my friends, my absence is only temporary! At dawn, enriched by my introspections, I shall reappear in the light, reborn to myself.”
